| August Series — Wrigley Field | |||
| Aug 6 | Wrigley Field | Sox 8–6 | White Sox This was Craig Kimbrel's first game back at Wrigley after the Cubs traded him to the White Sox just a week earlier. He entered with the Sox leading 4–1 in the eighth and promptly blew the lead, allowing Andrew Romine's game-tying three-run homer. Brian Goodwin then hit a two-run homer in the 10th, and the Sox survived 8–6. His arm hangs down like a flamingo's leg. Very Strange. |
| Aug 7 | Wrigley Field | Sox 4–0 | White Sox Carlos Rodón was filthy: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 11 K, and Sox pitching struck out 17 Cubs altogether. César Hernández and José Abreu also went back-to-back with homers. |
| Aug 8 | Wrigley Field | Sox 9–3 | White Sox The first MLB regular-season game broadcast on ABC since 1995. |
| August Series — Guaranteed Rate Field | |||
| Aug 27 | Guaranteed Rate Field | Sox 17–13 | White Sox Most combined runs in Crosstown Classic history — 30 total. The Cubs actually led 6–0 in the first inning. Then the Sox scored eight runs in the third and eventually won 17–13. Yasmani Grandal, in his first game back from the injured list, went 4-for-6 with two HR, a double and 8 RBI. Those eight RBI tied the White Sox single-game franchise record for guys who were named Yasmani. |
| Aug 28 | Guaranteed Rate Field | Cubs 7–0 | Cubs After allowing 17 runs the night before, the Cubs shut the Sox out. Alec Mills went eight scoreless innings. Rafael Ortega hit a grand slam and Wisdom hit two more home runs. That gave Wisdom back-to-back two-homer games, making him the first Cubs rookie ever named Wisdom to do that. |
| Aug 29 | Guaranteed Rate Field | Sox 13–1 | White Sox Sox close the series 5-1. 12-run margin was the White Sox's largest margin of victory against the Cubs at the time. One day after being shut out, the Sox hit five home runs and won by 12. Dylan Cease went six innings and struck out 11. The Cubs Cease'd to hit against him. |
2021 Series Notes
The South Side had a monster year. The 2021 White Sox were legitimate AL contenders — they finished 93-69 and won the AL Central. The Cubs, meanwhile, blew up their roster at the trade deadline in late July.
The defining moment: August 27, Guaranteed Rate Field. White Sox 17, Cubs 13. Thirty combined runs. Yasmani Grandal hit two home runs and drove in 8 in his first game back from injury. The Cubs hit four home runs. Neither bullpen survived. It remains the highest-scoring game in Crosstown Classic history.
MLB aired the August 8 game on ABC— the first regular-season baseball game aired on ABC since 1995.
