The year everything changed on the South Side. The 2005 White Sox went 99-63 under Ozzie Guillen, swept the Red Sox in the ALDS, swept the Angels in the ALCS, and swept the Houston Astros in the World Series. 88 years of waiting, over in four games.

In the middle of all that, they split the Crosstown Classic 3-3. The May series at Wrigley went 2-1 Sox — Freddy Garcia beat Greg Maddux in the opener, the Sox took the first two, the Cubs salvaged Game 3. Then in June at U.S. Cellular, the Sox put up a 12-2 blowout in Game 1 — still the largest margin of victory in Crosstown Classic history. The Cubs answered with back-to-back wins to take the June series 2-1.

The 2005 Cubs were a mess by comparison — Dusty Baker’s last year, the team finished 79-83. Derrek Lee was having a great year before breaking his wrist in late April. Greg Maddux was 39 years old. It wasn’t a fair fight in October, and not much of one in the regular season either.

But Sox fans didn’t need the Crosstown Classic. They had the World Series🏆. They still have it. Cubs fans: 😟 noted.
