1997 Series Notes

June 16, 1997. New Comiskey Park. The first regular season game between the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox. It finally counted. Interleague play was brand new to baseball that year, and Chicago got the rivalry everyone in the city had been waiting for since the last time these two teams played for something real — the 1906 World Series.

All three games were played at New Comiskey (now Guaranteed Rate Field) over three days. The Cubs won the opener in convincing fashion — 8-3 on 14 hits. Kevin Foster pitched well and the Cubs offense looked sharp. Sammy Sosa was in the lineup for all three games, as was Ryne Sandberg in what would be his final season, Mark Grace, and Brian McRae.

On the South Side, Albert Belle was in his first year with the Sox after signing a then-record $55 million free agent deal. Ozzie Guillen was still at short. Harold Baines was the DH. These were real rosters with real names people remembered.

The Sox took Games 2 and 3 to win the inaugural series 2-1. Dave Martinez homered twice across the series. Wilson Alvarez shut the Cubs out in the finale. The blood feud had its first result: White Sox 2, Cubs 1.
